As the market for advanced handheld products has grown exponentially over the past few years, so has the sophistication and functionality of those same products. PDAs, PMPs, cell phones, and portable gaming consoles can do just about everything that a traditional desktop can. These products can make phone calls, play songs and videos, watch live TV, send email, and much more.
All of this extra functionality comes at a cost: increased power consumption. With displays often accounting for the majority of the power usage in mobile products, companies have been researching alternatives to the current energy intensive LCD technology.
The most promising of these new technologies is organic light-emitting diode displays, or OLEDs. The current forecast is for OLED revenue to surpass $6.2B by 2010.
This new display technology has many advantages over LCD, especially with respect to image quality. Unfortunately, OLED is just as power inefficient as LCD and each of the new display technologies share the same primary flaw: light from the display is sent to areas where there are no users.
The Steered Beam Display (SBD), one of four technologies in the DigiDelve OLED suite, was developed to remove this flaw and provide a very low power display suitable for advanced portable products to OLED panel manufacturers and OEMs.
